Friday 13th has brought superstition and fear for many centuries, with no one knowing exactly where it first came from.
The date comes and goes every year and some believe it to be an extremely superstitious day.
Some may avoid making plans on the date, while others may ignore it and carry on as normal.
But looking at past history and events, you can’t deny that Friday 13th has been an extremely unlucky day for some, with tragic events having taken place.
We’ve put together a list of some of the bad things that have happened on Friday the 13th – are they a spooky coincidence or a touch of fate?
- Buckingham Palace was bombed
In 1940 on Friday 13 September, Buckingham Palace was bombed.
The attack took place during World War II, whilst the King and Queen were staying in the Palace.
In a statement after the event, the Queen said ” we are glad we have been bombed. Now I can look the East End in the face.”
- Boy struck by lightning
Last year on Friday 13th, a 13-year-old boy was struck by lightning whilst at an air show in England.
Luckily the boy was only treated for minor burns from the lighting strike.
The bolt only went through his shoulder and he made a full recovery.
- Costa Concordia cruise ship sank
On Friday 13th January 2012, the Costa Concordia ship ran aground and capsized.
It sank off the coast of Italy, killing 32 people.
The captain was convicted of manslaughter in 2015. The ship was carrying over 3,000 passengers and over 1,000 crew members.
- Uruguayan Flight 571 plane crash
In 1972 on Friday 13 October a plane heading to Chile was forced to crash land in the Andes, survivors of the crash hid in the wreckage and ate deceased passengers.
A rescue team was sent out but the mission was called off after ten days, however, 72 days after the crash two men appeared alerting authorities that there were still 16 survivors trapped in the mountains.
- Aeroflot 217 plane crash
Another tragic plane crash happened in 1972 – also on Friday 13 October.
The crash killed all 164 passengers and 10 flight crew.
The plane needed to land due to bad weather but crashed upon landing in Russia, just three miles away from the runway.
It is one of the worst plane crashes that has ever happened and is the worst in Russian history.
- Flight DC-3 disappeared forever
The Swedish plane was flying over the Baltic Sea on Friday 13 June, 1952, before it disappeared and was never found again.
At the time the Government had said it was performing a training exercise but 40 years later, the National Geographic said it was spying on the Soviet military.
A Russian pilot later told a Swedish diplomat that he had shot the plane down.
- The founder of the Ku Klux Klan was born
One of the worst people to have been born on Friday 13th was Nathan Bedford Forrest, the Grand Wizard and founder of the Ku Klux Klan.
Born on July 13, 1821, Nathan was in charge of the Fort Pillow Massacre, where he and his men killed over 200 unarmed Union soldiers, most of whom were black.
- Tupac Shakur dies
On Friday 7th September, 1996, rapper Tupac was shot four times in Vegas and died six days later on September 13 from his injuries.
The case was unresolved with people suspecting his friend Suge Knight and Christopher Wallace (Notorious B.IG) of the murder.
- Bhola cyclone kills 500,000 people
One of the most tragic natural disasters in history happened on Friday 13 November, 1970, when a cyclone hit Bangladesh.
It was the deadliest cyclone in history, killing an estimated 500,000 people, and was the start of the civil war, in the fight for Bangladeshi independence.
- Stock market crash
In 1989, the stock market experienced a ‘mini crash’ after the buyout of United Airlines fell through on Friday 13 October.
The results left a lot of people losing a lot of money and the repercussion of the failed buyout rippled through the stock market.
